EU to Expand Fiscal Rule Exception for Defense Spending to Energy Security
BRUSSELS (Jiji Press) — The European Union's European Commission announced on the 3rd that it will expand the scope of exceptions to fiscal rules, which were established to increase defense spending, to include investments related to energy security. This policy was included in the annual recommendations for economic and fiscal policies for member states.
In response to rising energy prices and supply concerns due to the worsening situation in the Middle East, the aim is to encourage investment in renewable energy and other sources, thereby reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.
