27-Year-Old Indian Man Killed in Rare Black Bear Attack in Saskatchewan, Canada

A 27-year-old Indian man working at a uranium exploration site in Saskatchewan, Canada, was fatally attacked by a black bear on Friday evening, April 19, near Nordbye Lake. This incident is considered extremely rare, being only the fourth recorded fatal bear attack in the province’s history, with the last one occurring in 2020.

The victim, whose name has not been officially released, was on a contract assignment at the Zoo Bay property operated by Vancouver-based UraniumX Discovery Corp., approximately 850 kilometers northeast of Saskatoon. His brother stated that he had moved to Canada three years ago and resided in Penticton, British Columbia.

Following the attack, a civilian present at the site shot and killed the bear, which was then transported to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon for a necropsy to examine its health and physical condition.

Douglas Clark, a professor specializing in human-bear conflict at the University of Saskatchewan, noted that the light spring with significant snow cover has led to bears having limited food sources, increasing their travel distances for food and thereby raising the risk for outdoor workers. Clark emphasized the effectiveness of bear spray and urged its use in bear-prone areas. Authorities had issued a public reminder about emerging bears on the same day as the attack, advising precautions.

The incident highlights the rare but potentially deadly nature of human-bear encounters in the region.
