Artificial intelligence is creating new, lucrative roles for skilled tradespeople in India, with demand for electricians, HVAC technicians, and robotics specialists surging. This 'labour flip' sees blue-collar wages growing faster than entry-level white-collar salaries, as AI's physical infrastructure requires human expertise for installation and maintenance.

For years, the conversation around artificial intelligence has focused on the jobs it could replace. But a new trend emerging in India's labour market suggests AI is also creating lucrative opportunities for a different class of workers — electricians, HVAC technicians and robotics specialists.

According to an analysis by talent firm Randstad of more than 50 million job postings, demand for electricians in India has jumped by 242% over the past four years. As reported by the Times of India, hiring for HVAC technicians has surged by 200%, while demand for robotics technicians has skyrocketed by more than 500%.

The trend highlights a growing reality of the AI era: every breakthrough in artificial intelligence requires a vast physical infrastructure powered by skilled human workers. Data centres need electricity, cooling systems must operate around the clock, and factories increasingly rely on automation equipment that requires installation and maintenance.

Randstad India Managing Director and CEO Viswanath P S described the shift as a "labour flip", where skilled technical trades are beginning to outperform many traditional entry-level office jobs.

The change is also reflected in salaries. The analysis found that blue-collar wages in India are growing at an average annual rate of 5.7%, compared with 4% for entry-level white-collar positions. As a result, the salary gap between skilled tradespeople and office workers is narrowing rapidly.

Some specialised technical roles are already earning significantly more than basic desk jobs. Mechanics involved in robotics and specialised maintenance earn an average annual salary of $9,106, while plant and machine operators make around $7,815. Workers in the building and construction sector earn about $5,420 annually, while electricians, including those involved in HVAC installation and wiring, earn approximately $3,296.

By comparison, entry-level white-collar positions such as data-entry operators and junior accounting professionals earn around $2,711 annually. Many of these jobs are also increasingly exposed to automation and AI-driven efficiencies.

The hiring numbers tell a similar story. India's blue-collar job volumes have grown by 93% between 2022 and 2026, driven largely by infrastructure projects and the rapid expansion of AI-related facilities. White-collar jobs have also expanded by more than 40%, making India one of the few major economies experiencing growth across both segments.

As companies race to build AI infrastructure, the biggest beneficiaries may not be software engineers alone. Increasingly, electricians, HVAC experts and robotics technicians are becoming some of the most sought-after workers in the country's AI-powered economy.
