Following the BJP-led NDA's record victory in Assam Assembly elections, Himanta Sarma launched a sharp attack on Congress, saying that 'people of Assam made Pawan Khera eat peda', reports NDTV. The BJP scripted a record victory in the Assam Assembly elections, bagging 102 of the 126 seats to retain power for a third straight term. While the BJP won 82 seats, its regional allies, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), won 10 seats each.

'Assam made Pawan Khera eat peda'

"Opposition should not hire Pawan Khera again. Assamese people made Pawan Khera eat pera"," Himanta Sarma said while addressing party workers and media professionals after the win.

"Post-2016, Assam's image has completely changed both inside and outside the state. Assam is now being considered a development-oriented state because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah," Sarma stated.

Himanta Sarma also launched a sharp and controversial attack against Pawan Khera even as Assam waited for the results on May 4. During an interaction with the media, Sarma took a dig at Congress leader Pawan Khera, saying, "Pawan Khera ko main Pawan peda bana dunga," implying he would reduce him politically.

The remark came after Pawan Khera, along with Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, alleged links between assets and foreign connections involving Himanta Sarma’s wife. The claims triggered a sharp response from the Chief Minister, further intensifying the political confrontation.

In one instance, he referred to Khera with a derogatory remark, saying, “Pawan Khera ka baenga ‘peda’.” The BJP leader also issued a strict warning, stating, “Usko acche se pe****a,” signalling tough action against the Congress leader.

Himanta Sarma accused Pawan Khera of spreading misleading information regarding alleged passport details linked to his family and said the matter would be pursued legally. He emphasised that such allegations should have been verified with the External Affairs Ministry before being made public. The Chief Minister also suggested that the controversy could widen, hinting at the possible involvement of other senior Congress leaders.

Pawan Khera had publicly alleged that Sarma's wife held foreign citizenship and owned assets abroad. However, these claims were rejected by Sarma and his wife, who termed the documents presented as fabricated and initiated legal action.
