Bangladesh, Russia Strengthen Ties with Rooppur Nuclear Plant, Discuss BRICS Membership and Rohingya Issue

Bangladesh and Russia have lauded their cooperation on the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, with the project entering its final stage. The plant, built with Russian support, is seen as a landmark of cooperation between the two nations. Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and Russia's Sergey Lavrov met in Moscow to discuss strengthening ties, including Bangladesh's potential membership in the BRICS grouping once the bloc resumes admissions. Russia has pledged long-term support for the nuclear plant, including fuel supply and waste management. Rahman expressed interest in broader cooperation, including space and nuclear technologies, and noted the potential for Bangladeshi workers in Russia. Lavrov supported Bangladesh's BRICS bid and discussed the Rohingya refugee issue, advocating for a bilateral resolution between Bangladesh and Myanmar without external interference. The meeting also touched on the Ukraine conflict, with Lavrov praising Bangladesh's balanced stance. Next year, Bangladesh will host events to mark the 50th anniversary of its diplomatic relations with Russia.
