SEOUL, June 4 (Yonhap) -- Cho Kuk, leader of the minor Rebuilding Korea Party, said Thursday he would step down as party leader after suffering defeat in a parliamentary by-election held alongside the June 3 local elections.

"I failed to open a new path of hope for our party members who devoted themselves in the name of the Rebuilding Korea Party for this election," he said in a Facebook post, adding that he takes full responsibility for the outcome.

In the parliamentary by-elections in the closely watched race of the Pyeongtaek-B constituency in Gyeonggi Province, Cho came in third behind Yu Eui-dong of the main opposition People Power Party and Kim Yong-nam of the ruling Democratic Party.

Cho's party failed to win any of the 16 key mayoral and gubernatorial seats, and the 14 parliamentary seats contested in the local elections.
