Colombian Navy Intercepts Vessel with 1,764 Pounds of Suspected Illegal Catch

Colombian authorities have intercepted a fishing vessel carrying approximately 1,764 pounds of suspected illegally caught marine animals believed to have been taken from the protected Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, bringing renewed attention to illegal fishing in one of the country's most ecologically important marine reserves.

The Colombian Navy, known as the Armada de Colombia, said the vessel was stopped during maritime control and security operations in the Colombian Pacific. Three Ecuadorian citizens who were aboard the boat were handed over to the Judicial Police as authorities began investigating the suspected illegal catch.

According to the official statement by the Armada de Colombia, officials believe the marine animals originated from the Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, a protected area renowned for its rich marine biodiversity. However, authorities have not released the names of the species recovered from the vessel. The absence of a species list means the environmental impact of the seizure cannot yet be fully assessed.

While the confiscated catch weighed approximately 1,764 pounds, officials have not disclosed whether it included sharks, fish or other protected marine wildlife. The seized marine animals were transferred to Colombia's National Natural Parks authority. Officials have not provided details about their condition or what steps will be taken following the confiscation.

Protected marine reserve under threat

The Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary is among Colombia's most important marine protected areas and is internationally recognised for its unique underwater ecosystem. Its coral reefs and underwater mountains, known as seamounts, provide habitat for a wide variety of marine species. The sanctuary is home to hammerhead sharks, whale sharks, dolphins, humpback whales and large schools of fish, making it one of the world's most sought-after destinations for scuba divers and marine researchers. Despite its protected status, illegal fishing remains an ongoing concern. Conservationists have repeatedly warned that marine reserves require constant surveillance because designated boundaries alone cannot prevent vessels from entering protected waters.

Investigation underway

Authorities have not confirmed whether formal charges have been filed against the three Ecuadorian nationals. Investigators are expected to determine the precise location where the catch was taken, the fishing gear used and whether sufficient evidence links the seized marine animals directly to the protected sanctuary. Those findings could influence both the environmental assessment and any legal proceedings arising from the case.

The Colombian Navy has appealed to fishermen, sailors and coastal communities to report activities that threaten natural resources, particularly inside protected marine areas.
