Consumer Reports: Hybrids More Reliable Than Gas Cars, PHEVs Less So Than EVs

As electric vehicles (EVs) have not yet become mainstream, hybrid vehicles (HEVs) have become a preferred option for many.

According to foreign media reports, the US "Consumer Reports" also conducted a reliability survey on hybrid vehicles. The 2026 data shows that the failure rate of hybrid vehicles is 15% lower than that of the same gasoline models, but the failure rate of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models is 23% higher than that of pure electric vehicles. Toyota still has the most reliable and comprehensive hybrid vehicle models.

Foreign media "Autoblog" reported that US "Consumer Reports" tracked vehicles with an age of 12 months or less, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. "Consumer Reports" also listed purchasing recommendations for four Japanese car manufacturers. Toyota is the safest choice for purchasing hybrid models, with the widest product line, longer battery warranty, and leading "Consumer Reports" ratings in its class.

Honda leads in short-term quality, ranking high in JD Power's 2025 IQS scores. Subaru's pure gasoline models rank first in reliability according to "Consumer Reports". Mazda CX-70/CX-90 PHEV is considered the most adventurous choice. Mazda has fallen eight places in "Consumer Reports" 2026 rankings, dropping from sixth to fourteenth, making it the brand with the largest year-on-year decline among mainstream brands.
