Firefighters Union Loses Bid to Block Anti-Corruption Report

The United Firefighters Union and its secretary, Peter Marshall, have lost their bid to remain anonymous while challenging the release of a report by Victoria’s anti-corruption watchdog, IBAC, into alleged corruption during labor negotiations under the Andrews government.

The Court of Appeal upheld a decision denying the parties pseudonym orders, meaning their identities will be revealed in court proceedings. The report, titled Operation Richmond, investigated negotiations between the union, the Country Fire Authority, and the government, particularly focusing on allegations surrounding the Andrews-era dealings.

The legal battle to block the report’s release continues, with secret Supreme Court hearings scheduled for later this month. The IBAC investigation, which began in 2018, looked into events dating back to Daniel Andrews’ first term, including a contentious 2014 union campaign and the subsequent intervention by Andrews in 2016 that led to the resignation of Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett.

Peter Marshall stated that while respecting the court’s decision, the union and he are prohibited from discussing the report’s contents due to legal constraints. The case attracts significant attention due to its implications on transparency and the potential exposure of corruption within high-level government and union interactions.
