Google Launches Android 17 with Focus on Productivity, Security, and Gaming

Google has officially launched Android 17, rolling out its latest operating system upgrade to Pixel smartphones first, with other eligible Android devices set to receive the software throughout 2026. The latest update focuses on productivity, entertainment and advanced security – as the company detailed on The Android Show last month. Google also teased that select high-end devices will get proactive “Gemini Intelligence” features later this summer. Here are the key features coming to your phone with Android 17:

Multitasking with ‘Bubbles’

Android 17 is changing how users move between tasks with an upgraded “Bubbles” feature. By long-pressing any app icon, users can turn that app into a compact, floating window that sits on top of whatever else they are doing. For example, they can watch a video, reference a map, or read notes without leaving the current app. For large-screen devices like tablets and foldables, Google has added a dedicated “bubble bar” at the bottom of the screen, allowing users to switch between apps with a single tap, resize windows, or quickly maximise them to full screen.

Androi 17 brings Screen Reactions

Screen recording gets a major upgrade with a new toolbar and a simplified layout. There is “Screen Reactions” feature that allows users to simultaneously record their phone screen and video from their front-facing selfie camera. This makes it easy to record reaction videos over websites, apps, or trending clips without needing a green screen or external editing software.

New mode for gaming on foldable phones

Mobile gamers can get a major performance and layout boost for foldable phones. A new “foldable gaming mode” introduces an optimised 50/50 split layout, placing the game view on the top half of the screen and a dynamic gamepad on the bottom half. This feature will roll out to compatible games in the coming months. Additionally, Android 17 introduces native controller remapping for external controllers. Under the hood, Google has made system memory cleanup more efficient, which is claimed to reduce frame drops and stuttering during high-definition gaming.

Anti-theft and privacy upgrades

Security is the focal point for Android 17, which introduces a fix to stop tech-savvy thieves. A new “Mark as lost” feature inside Find Hub allows users to lock a missing phone using their biometrics. Even if a thief knows your numerical passcode, they will be blocked from accessing your personal data or turning off the phone’s location tracking. Other safety updates:

Targeted privacy: Users can now grant apps temporary access to their precise location, or share specific individual contacts instead of opening up their entire address book.

Thief deterrent: The system now reduces the number of times someone can guess your PIN, adding much longer wait times between failed attempts.

Scam protection: Upgraded Live Threat Detection and an enhanced Advanced Protection mode work in the background to block sophisticated digital threats and suspicious apps.

Performance and visual changes

For users who prefer a minimalist look, Android 17 adds a built-in home screen setting to hide app names under their icons. It also brings dedicated volume controls for virtual assistants, expanded dark theme customisation and extends built-in Parental Controls to all Android devices. One of the most user-friendly features is limiting the RAM usage, ensuring the phones run smoothly. The Android 17’s strict app memory limits prevents background apps from hogging too much RAM, directly improving the phone’s overall speed and daily battery life.
