Sam Mitchell touches on AFL's Tasmania decision

C

By Chris De Silva

Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell addresses the AFL's decision to force the Hawks out of Tasmania by 2028.

"We talked about it through the week and it's been a bit emotional in the last 24 hours," he says.

"All we can do is make the most of the next seven opportunities, and maybe a practice match.

"I'm really proud of what Hawthorn has done. The players are quite passionate about it.

"We understand the situation the AFL and the Devils are in ... but we're disappointed."

He's asked what was behind his blow-up in the opening quarter, and says it was centered around competitiveness, basically.

"We'd been beaten in every tough aspect in the game," he says.

"I thought the players adjusted really well. To their credit, they brought into the way the game needed to be played.

"You can't contest and tackles and clearances the way we did early."

And finally, here's what he had to say on Blake Hardwick's heroics in the forward line tonight.

"Blake is finally getting a little bit of credit," he says.

"He is a phenomenal footballer. His contest is fantastic and he's a beautiful kick.

"I'm please he'll get a bit of credit because he deserves it."

Nicks says Crows 'locked up' during second and third terms

C

By Chris De Silva

Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks is frustrated that his side missed an opportunity to claim a big scalp tonight.

"You just can't have seven goals in a row, you can't allow the game to get to that point," he says.

"You could say that should've been ours. We won a lot of different areas, not the game, credit to them.

"We looked like we were locked up in that second or third and were unable to open the game up. It's four quarters we're looking for.

"We've got some improving to do. We need a couple of big wins, it's not just one win. We want to knock off a couple of really good sides to give ourselves belief."

Nicks says he expects Cal Ah Chee to undergo an X-ray on his right hand.

"Concerning for us, concerning for Cal, he just can't take a trick at the moment," he says.

"He had a guard on it and couldn't feel it."

Here's what Nicks said on Izak Rankine not being able to run out the contest due to a calf injury.

Josh Weddle only finished with 17 disposals tonight, but his defensive efforts proved match-winning in the end.

Just superb commitment to the cause and in a close game like this, this is gold dust. It's the stuff the coaches absolutely love.

FT: Hawthorn 10.15 (75) defeats Adelaide 9.12 (66)

Hawthorn holds on in an absolute thriller at UTAS Stadium!

It looked for all money like the Hawks were about to get overrun, especially when the Crows got to within a goal, but Blake Hardwick's late goal sealed it.

It was an inspired move from Sam Mitchell to play Hardwick up forward tonight in the absence of Jack Gunston, but boy did it pay off.

Hardwick, who hadn't kicked a goal since Round 12 last year, pops up with four goals including that crucial late one to seal it.

It wasn't a perfect performance from the Hawks by any means, but the four premiership points will feel good after they were handled last week by the Dees.

Wayne Milera finishes the match as the leading ball-winner on the ground with 32 touches, with the game's top six ball-winners Adelaide players.

Josh Ward led the way for the Hawks with 24 touches, while Jai Newcombe picked up 10 clearances.

Jarman Impey was outstanding as well with an equal game-high 12 intercepts, and notably says the Hawks "love Tasmania" and they're going to spend some time here giving back to the community after the win.

Can't help but feel like that's a bit of a shot at the AFL for forcing the Hawks to cease playing home games in the state ahead of the Devils entering the competition in 2028.

Hardwick misses on the run after turnover

A horror turnover in the middle of the ground from the Crows gives the Hawks a chance, but Blake Hardwick misses on the run to the left.

He had Chol out in a ton of space there, but the ball floats through for a behind.

Ah Chee trims margin to just two points

C

By Chris De Silva

An aggressive kick-in after the Reeves miss opens things up and yields dividends for the Crows!

A lovely kick inside 50 finds Cal Ah Chee out the back of Hawthorn's defence, namely James Sicily, and Ah Chee drills the easy set shot from close range.

Hawthorn's lead down to just two points with just over seven minutes left.
