SEOUL, April 24 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's leading automaker, took the wraps off its first production model under its all-electric Ioniq brand tailored for the Chinese market at the 2026 Beijing auto show Friday.

The Ioniq V is built on a platform jointly developed with its Chinese partner, Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC Group), and features a battery system developed in collaboration with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL), the company said in a press release. The unveil comes ahead of the electric vehicle (EV) launch later this year.

The vehicle can travel more than 600 kilometers on a single charge and is equipped with an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), the carmaker said.

Derived from the Venus Concept, the Ioniq V introduces Hyundai Motor's new design language, "The Origin," for its all-electric lineup in China, reflecting a "best first impression" design philosophy.

Hyundai Motor said it plans to launch 20 new models in China over the next five years, including a new electrified sport utility vehicle (SUV) scheduled for release in the first half of 2027.

The maker of Sonata sedans and Santa Fe SUVs aims to achieve annual sales of 500,000 units in China, the world's largest automobile market.

"China is an essential market for Hyundai Motor. The world's most demanding EV consumers, the fastest development cycles, the deepest battery supply chain and an advanced innovation ecosystem. That is why we are tripling down on our commitment to China," said Jose Munoz, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Hyundai Motor.

Chang Jae-hoon, vice chair of Hyundai Motor Group, vowed to make a rebound in the Chinese market, where the Korean carmaker reported less than a 1 percent market share last year.

"China is the most difficult market, but we will turn around and succeed," he told reporters at a media event during the Beijing Auto Show. "We will focus on how we deploy the Ioniq brand in China and how it should be adapted."

To bolster its presence in China, Hyundai said it will expand partnerships with CATL and Momenta, which contributed to the Ioniq V's battery system and ADAS technologies, respectively.
