India's growing injury list has put the Centre of Excellence (COE) under the spotlight, with several players across formats currently dealing with fitness issues.

Jasprit Bumrah is battling knee swelling, while Sai Sudharsan has been sidelined by a left big toe injury. Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy are recovering from hamstring problems, while Washington Sundar is unavailable with a quadriceps injury.

The number of players missing or recovering from injuries has raised questions about India's injury management and rehabilitation system, particularly with the team preparing for an important phase across formats.

Bumrah's latest setback has attracted particular attention. The premier fast bowler has been ruled out of India's upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka after failing to recover from the knee injury he sustained during the England tour. With Bumrah central to India's plans in all three formats, his fitness remains a major priority as the team looks towards the next World Cup and continues its campaign in the World Test Championship cycle. The development has also led to scrutiny of the Centre of Excellence and its role in assessing players' fitness.

However, former India batter Subramaniam Badrinath has stressed that the facility does not decide whether a player is selected. According to Badrinath, the COE's responsibility is to provide the team management with information about a player's physical condition and recovery. The final decision on selection rests with the captain, coach and selectors.

"I don't know who made the decision. COE will not make the selection, right? They will just say he is in this state and can play these matches and his body is in this state. But I think the captain, coach, and selectors are taking the decision. COE only passes the information. They are not selectors," Subramaniam Badrinath said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Badrinath also urged caution against treating India's injury problems as a single issue. He pointed out that the players currently dealing with injuries have suffered different types of setbacks, making it difficult to identify one common cause behind the growing list.

While injuries are an inevitable part of elite sport, Badrinath believes workload management, fitness and consistent monitoring remain crucial to keeping players on the field.

"I don't have an immediate answer to the root cause of so many injuries. It is important to see what kind of injuries these are. At high-level professional sport, injuries are common. Sai Sudharsan got hit by a ball, with Bumah, it is a chronic injury because of being overused and fitness is not Sundar's forte, he is injury-prone. His fitness needs a lot of work. Management and monitoring is very important. Injuries are bound to happen and you cannot control it," he said.

The comments come at a time when India are having to manage the fitness of several important players, making rehabilitation and workload monitoring increasingly important as the team's schedule continues across formats.
