MOSCOW, June 25. /TASS/. Russia could not allow nuclear weapons to appear in Ukraine; the West did not respond to its concerns, so Moscow was compelled to launch its special military operation, Italian political analyst and publisher Sandro Teti told TASS in an interview.

"During the Cuban Missile Crisis, US President John F. Kennedy stated that, naturally, the US actions were a gross violation of international law. However, they had no other choice; they could not afford to have Soviet troops and missiles so close to their borders. At that time, Nikita Khrushchev, First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, realized that a third world war – that is, the end of the world – was looming. And he decided to withdraw all troops and all weapons from Cuba. That is how a nuclear conflict was averted," the expert recalled.

According to Teti, Moscow acted on the same considerations. "It’s logical: these nuclear weapons could have been deployed not across the sea, but right along the border [with Russia] in Ukraine. But there was no response from the West. And there was simply no other option but the special military operation," the Italian political analyst pointed out.

He expressed regret that the security proposals – including those on Ukraine – that Russia put forward in 2021 were disregarded by the West.

Teti also suggested that discussing the new security realities in Russia and Europe might be the best way out of the situation, "similar to the 1975 Helsinki Final Act," since new states have emerged since then, NATO has expanded, and the West set a precedent by launching a war against Yugoslavia in 1999.
