Jhandu Kumar, a 29-year-old para powerlifter from Bihar, has won a bronze medal in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting event at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, marking a historic achievement for Indian para sports.

Jhandu’s journey is one of remarkable perseverance, overcoming polio at the age of five and initially supporting his family by driving an e-rickshaw and helping with their vegetable business in Harnaut, Nalanda district.

His path to the Commonwealth Games was paved by his coach, Gautam Singh, who recognized his potential in 2019 and later opened a gym in Harnaut for him to train. Despite challenges, including a period of driving an e-rickshaw to support his family during the COVID-19 pandemic, Jhandu persisted with his training.

A pivotal moment came when Chief National Coach Rajinder Singh Rahelu invited him to train at the Sports Authority of India’s National Centre of Excellence in Gandhinagar, transforming his career. Jhandu became a national record holder in the 72kg category with a 206kg lift and secured his place at the Commonwealth Games.

Although he narrowly missed silver, standing on the podium was a dream fulfilled. Jhandu credits his success to the support of his family, coach, and institutions, expressing pride in representing India and Bihar.

Back in Harnaut, celebrations erupted, with his family distributing sweets. His brother, Kundan, highlighted the difficulty of Jhandu’s journey, while their parents expressed uncontainable joy, hoping his achievement will secure them a shop in the new complex after years of waiting.

The Bihar State Sports Authority has pledged support for Jhandu’s future training, aiming for the Asian Games and hopefully the Paralympics in Los Angeles. This assurance is crucial as Jhandu had previously funded his own training, even selling his e-rickshaw to compete.

Jhandu’s story not only inspires India but also strengthens hopes for a breakthrough in international para sports, potentially leading to increased sponsorship and funding for para athletes.
