Justice Thomas Bradley announced as Queensland's 28th governor

Justice Thomas Bradley has been announced as Queensland's 28th governor.

Justice Bradley has served on the Supreme Court since 2018, moving to the Court of Appeal in 2025.

At a press conference this morning, Premier David Crisafulli said having lived in both the far north and the south-east, the "born and raised Queenslander" understands the decentralised nature of the state.

"To have someone who has dedicated their life to service in one way or another is deeply honouring," he said.

"Every Governor puts their stamp on the role, and I'm very confident that Justice Bradley will do that."

Justice Bradley said it was a "tremendous honour" to be stepping into the role, and said his focus will be ensuring Queenslanders across all communities feel a sense of unity.

"I share the goals of my predecessors of Governors of Queensland, to carry out the Constitutional responsibilities with dignity, fairness, and commitment to the rule of law," he said.

"Advocacy and patronage for a diverse range of Queensland groups is another integral part of the role, and I look forward to spending time with as many Queenslanders as possible across the state as I serve."

Outside of his career in the courts, Justice Bradley has carried out roles including the Chair of the Brisbane Festival Giving Committee, ambassador for the Pinnacle Foundation, and on the Gallery of Modern Art Foundation Committee.

He said discussions of becoming the next governor began with the premier in May, before he was formally advised last week that His Majesty the King had approved the appointment.

Justice Bradley will be sworn in on November 1, taking over from Dr Jeannette Young, who has served five years in the role.

"I look forward to sitting down, as Her Excellency's schedule suits, to speak with the existing governor to learn more about what advice she might have to offer," he said.

"I have commitments to the court, which will continue in the meantime."

The premier acknowledged the work of Dr Young.

"Her energy in the role has been fantastic, and I've conveyed how deeply appreciate we are of her service over the years."

Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said the governor plays an "impartial and important role to uphold the constitution and Queensland law".

"I have known Justice Thomas Bradley for many years now, in his community achievements and endeavours on the Supreme Court, and I know that he will fulfil his duty diligently and faithfully and will serve all the people of Queensland for his time in office."

The incoming governor said he will now scale back his existing work commitments, and will speak with the Chief Justice and the President of the Court of Appeal to confirm when he will finish up in the courts.

"I'm very honoured to have been selected as a judge in 2018 and to have been able to serve in that capacity, because it's a capacity in which you see in detail the lives of many people, and it's a level of detail that not a lot of members of the community get to see," Justice Bradley said.

"If you become used to something, you will miss aspects of it. But life doesn't ever stay the same, it will always change."
