Ken Paxton Wins Republican Primary Runoff for Texas Senate Seat

Ken Paxton, backed by Donald Trump, has won the Republican primary runoff for the Texas Senate seat, defeating incumbent John Cornyn. Despite facing numerous scandals, including impeachment, securities fraud charges, and a highly publicized divorce, Paxton secured the nomination. He will now face Democratic nominee James Talarico, a pastor and state legislator, in the general election. Talarico’s message of peace and populism has garnered attention, and if successful, he would be the first Democrat to win a statewide Texas office in over 30 years.

The race has significant implications for Trump’s influence within the Republican Party and the broader midterm election landscape. Midterms often serve as a referendum on the sitting president, with Democrats currently favored to win the House. However, a Supreme Court decision weakening the Voting Rights Act could benefit Republicans by allowing for more GOP-leaning districts.

Paxton, first elected as Texas Attorney General in 2014, has positioned himself as a far-right leader, notably launching early investigations into abortion bans and gender-affirming care for transgender youth. He also led a failed lawsuit to overturn Trump’s 2020 election loss. Political science professor Brandon Rottinghaus noted, “Paxton was Donald Trump before Donald Trump was,” highlighting his early involvement in the Tea Party movement, a precursor to the MAGA movement.

Despite his victory, Paxton brings substantial political baggage. National Republicans are concerned about the potential need for increased financial support due to his controversies. Paxton was impeached in 2023 on corruption charges but acquitted in a Texas Senate trial. He also faced felony securities fraud charges, which were dismissed in 2024 after a pre-trial diversion agreement. Personally, his wife of 38 years, Angela, filed for divorce in 2024, citing adultery on “biblical grounds.”

Incumbent John Cornyn, a prominent Republican figure who nearly became Senate Majority Leader, conceded graciously, stating he would continue supporting the GOP ticket. Cornyn attempted to appeal to Trump die-hards with conservative initiatives, including a bill to name a highway after Trump, but became a target of Trump’s retribution campaign. In a social media post, Trump labeled Cornyn as “VERY disloyal.”

The general election between Paxton and Talarico is anticipated to be highly competitive, with Talarico’s unconventional candidacy offering Democrats a potential upset in deeply conservative Texas.
