Live updates: Mexico vs England

By Simon Smale

61' ENGLAND SCORES!

By Simon Smale

Harry Kane has another goal this World Cup.

A brilliant penalty, Rangel guessing right but despite a great effort he never got near it, Kane whipping the ball side-footed into the side netting.

His 73rd goal of the season.

60' Lots of time-wasting at the penalty

By Simon Smale

Jude Bellingham was holding the ball.

Mexico players crowd the penalty spot.

Now the referee clears them and Rangel comes forward, taking off his gloves and retying them.

Harry Kane is given the ball.

58' PENALTY ENGLAND!

By Simon Smale

Brilliant flick-on from Harry Kane.

Brilliant burst of pace from Anthony Gordon.

Down he goes, Rangel getting his timing wrong, and it's a penalty kick.

Stonewall penalty.

57' England makes a sub

By Simon Smale

England have to bring on a defender.

Saka is coming off and on comes John Stones.

65' Rice drops to right back

By Simon Smale

Julián Quiñones has a shot from distance and the ball trickles out for a goal kick.

54' Jarell Quansah is sent off

By Simon Smale

England are down to 10 men and it is absolutely the correct decision.

It's a horrible challenge — a disgusting challenge, actually.

52' Bad challenge from Jarell Quansah

By Simon Smale

It's a horrible challenge from Jarell Quansah on Jesús Gallardo.

The Mexico bench is furious and there's a scuffle on the sideline!

My word.

That might take some dealing with.

51' Magnificent skill from Bellingham

By Simon Smale

Oh my goodness, that was magical from Bellingham.

He spins around two would-be tacklers with a deft flick and then races towards the goal.

He goes down, but it's well defended — a brilliant tackle.

49' ENGLAND HITS THE POST!

By Simon Smale

A brilliant cross played across the six-yard box goes all the way through from Gordon.

England take the throw and the ball finds its way to Nico O'Reilly, who fires a shot towards goal from distance which pings back off the post!

Rengel looked to have it covered on the dive but even so, a hell of an effort.

48' Missed chance for Mexico

By Simon Smale

Julián Quiñones has a long-range effort, but the option was to play in Jorge Sánchez.

The effort was blocked and England come away.

At least two more quarters

By Simon Smale

Hello Simon, take a few deep breaths - there are still two quarters to go!

- Mike

Let's not rule this out going to extra time.

46' Mexico makes half-time sub

By Simon Smale

César Montes is off.

Edson Álvarez comes on.

Has to be an injury, you'd think. Montes was captain in the first half for Mexico.

England 'did really well'

By Simon Smale

Wayne Rooney, former England striker, has praised the way England went about the first half.

"England did really well to get to the hydration break, then after they came out and looked like they had more energy about them," he tells the BBC.

"They first goal then continued with the second but the last five minutes there was a bit nervy — the response from Mexico was brilliant."

His former teammate Joe Hart wishes he was there.

"This is an absolute belter of a game. I wish I was in that stadium," he tells the BBC.

"The energy is through the roof. Just when you thought England had silenced Mexico, for them to come back and score that goal, it was then backs to the wall for the last five minutes.

"But, they dug in, big save from Pickford, good defending from Bellingham. Can't wait for the second half."

'Full-throttle match': England coach

By Simon Smale

Here's England's assistant coach Anthony Barry, speaking to BBC Sport.

"No frustration. A full-throttle match.

"Every minute feels like the 90th minute. Mexico always starts the game fast, and we knew at the water break that 0-0 would be a good result for us, and it was.

"From there, we had the quality to come into the game. One of our biggest players scores. Jude does what he does."

Half-time stats

By Simon Smale

Mexico has had far more of the ball.

But England's chances have been better with two goals from three shots, all of which were on target for an xG of 0.69 according to Opta.

HT: A breathless half of football sees England lead 2-1

By Simon Smale

My goodness, what a half of football. England were playing with their backs against the wall but scored two stunning goals on the counterattack as Jude Bellingham headed and slid home within 100 seconds of each other.

Then Mexico responded.

A cheap free kick costing England plenty on the right side, as Julián Quiñones smashed home from inside the box.

A brilliant game of football.

45+4' CHANCE MEXICO!

By Simon Smale

Jude Bellingham take a bow!

He's just got his boot on a ball two metres from his own line and flicked it over just as César Montes was about to pull the trigger.

What a block.

He's stopped a certain goal there.

45+3' WHAT A SAVE!

By Simon Smale

MAGICAL FROM PICKFORD!

England felt like they should have had a free kick when Gilberto Mora raked his studs down the back of Saka's Achilles.

It's not given and Pickford is called upon to make a brilliant save, tipping the ball over the bar from a Jiménez header.

Offene Fragen

  • What will be the final score?
  • Will there be further red cards?
  • How will the teams perform in the remaining quarters?
