Lucas Herrington, fresh off becoming the youngest Australian to start a game at a men’s World Cup, is set to become the second-most expensive footballer in Australian history with a move to newly-promoted Premier League side Hull City. Latest reports suggest a fee of approximately £12.6m ($24.1m), with a further £4.4m ($8.4m) in add-ons, which comes in just shy of the Australian record of £15m plus £5m in add-ons ($38.3m in total) that Leicester paid Stoke City to sign Harry Souttar in 2023.

It would set a new selling high-water mark for his current club, Colorado Rapids, and eclipses the decade-old record Hull set when they paid just over £10m for Ryan Mason. Given the trajectory of Herrington’s meteoric rise, it feels a pretty safe bet to assume the 18-year-old will claim Souttar’s record outright sooner rather than later.

Hull may not be quite as attractive as a move to Barcelona or Liverpool, both of whom were linked to Herrington in recent months. But such a view overlooks that it was only a few years ago that a lack of representation in major European leagues was decried. Clubs in those competitions are now paying record fees for Australia’s brightest young talents.

The only cohort in Australia that should be perturbed by the deal is those connected to Brisbane Roar, having watched as the club (which as a reminder, is granted a monopoly over Queensland by the A-League Men’s current closed nature) sold their sell-on fee back to the Rapids for a reported $560,000. It meant the club missed out on a minimum $4.8m, not even a year on from Herrington’s departure.

Importantly, in moving to Hull’s MKM Stadium rather than the Camp Nou or Anfield for such a significant fee, the central defender should ostensibly be able to play the regular senior football that will maintain his remarkable rise. Even if Hull prove to be one-and-done in the English top-flight, Herrington will still be a teenager at the end of this season, battle-hardened by a year of playing on club football’s biggest stage on his resume.

Barring disaster, it should only help establish his future at that level, as well as help develop his game in a manner in which the Socceroos can reap the benefits.

Herrington is not the only member of the young cohort from Tony Popovic’s Socceroos squad that looks set to capitalise on appearing at the World Cup, even if the days of the tournament serving as a one-stop shop for the transfer market have long since passed. In the days of modern analytics and digitised global scouting, no player is ever truly off the radar.

Herrington is one of eight players aged 23 or under who started a game in North America. Since the tournament ended, Paul-Okon Engstler sealed a move from Sydney FC to Bundesliga outfit FC Köln, while breakout goalkeeper Patrick Beach concluded a move seven months in the making when he shifted in the City Football Group from Melbourne City to newly-promoted Ligue 1 side Troyes.

The moves of Okon-Engstler and Beach are notable in that they are making the jump straight from the A-League Men to one of Europe’s big five leagues, with early indications from pre-season suggesting they’re chances to start or see decent minutes. Is it remarkable, given the last time Australian players successfully went directly from the Australian top-flight to regular minutes in one of these leagues was in the days of Vince Grella and Stan Lazaridis – who left NSL sides Carlton and West Adelaide, respectively.

There is still plenty of development ahead for the likes of Herrington, Beach and Okon-Engstler. Simply getting to these leagues isn’t the end of the journey, but the start of a new one. But add to this Champions League-bound Sporting CP’s reported pursuit of Nestory Irankunda (on a deal that should eclipse Souttar’s if it goes through) and the Premier League clubs that were circling Jordy Bos before his unfortunate injury against Egypt forced him to undergo surgery, and it substantiates the excitement around the young talent coming through Australian football’s pathways.

And though not of the same age cohort, a strong World Cup also has Souttar, still the Socceroos rock, on the verge of a Championship move, with Sheffield United and Wrexham his reported suitors in a move that should give him much-needed stability and hopes of a promotion push.

Mathew Ryan, after playing a major role in staving off relegation last season, has inked a return to La Liga side Levante for the 2026-27 campaign. In a significant boost to his chances of staying in the Socceroos mix, Tete Yengi has secured a permanent move to J-League side Machida Zelvia after spending the end of last season on loan, while Cammy Devlin has followed Derek McInnes from Hearts to Rangers. Ajdin Hrustić, meanwhile, has moved to UAE outfit Al-Nasr.
