Nine children have been taken to hospital after eating seeds from trees at a primary school in Nottinghamshire.

East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) said it was called to Jesse Gray Primary School in West Bridgford at 13:26 BST on Wednesday.

A group of Year 6 children were discovered to have eaten seeds from trees in the school grounds, the county council said.

As a precaution, nine Year 6 pupils were taken to the Queen's Medical Centre where they were monitored for several hours but discharged after a short period and have returned to school on Thursday.

EMAS confirmed it sent a number of resources including paramedics in ambulance cars, crewed ambulances and its Hazardous Area Response Team.

A county council spokesman said: "The area where the children were playing remains cordoned off, and following a professional inspection this morning by our school's ground maintenance team, a small number of trees will be removed.

"This morning's school assembly reinforced the message of safe play and the dangers of eating berries or seeds from trees and shrubs."
