FT: Haaland scores double as Norway beat Iraq

D

By David Hirst

Erling Haaland scored twice on his World Cup debut as Norway beat Graham Arnold's Iraq 4-1 in Boston.

Haaland slid in at the far post after a cross from the left to put Norway in front on 28 minutes.

Iraq levelled on 38 minutes when Aymen Hussein rose to power home a header after a cross from the left.

But disaster struck for Iraq when Jalal Hassan's clearance smashed off the onrushing Haaland's foot and flew into the net.

Substitute Leo Ostigard headed home the third from a corner on 75 minutes.

In the final seconds, Kristian Thorstvedt bundled the ball home after Haaland headed across goal.

The cross comes in and Haaland heads it back across the goal and Kristian Thorstvedt bundles the ball home.

It's 4-1!

Haaland won't get his hat-trick but he'll get an assist for that one.

Norway looked impressive.

So far today, Mbappe has got two goals and Haaland has got two goals.

Sprinkler malfunction

S

By Simon Smale

AP

A sprinkler malfunctioned at Gillette Stadium during halftime of the World Cup match between Iraq and Norway.

A large stream of water spurted for several seconds from a sprinkler on the edge of the area in front of the goal in which Erling Haaland scored twice to give Norway a 2-1 halftime lead.

The rest of the sprinklers appeared to work as expected, but they all had to be turned off to prevent further damage from the malfunctioning one.

The grass appeared discoloured around the offending sprinkler head as groundskeepers ran out to attend to the problem.

Staff sloshed through the area with buckets and tools to disperse the water to other parts of the field.

The affected part of the field appeared to be back to normal by the time the players emerged for the second half.

Second drinks break

Pretty uneventful second half.

Iraq haven't really looked like getting back into the game.

Norway bring on Bobb, Thorstvedt, Schjelderup and Ostigard after the break.

Iraq bring on Saadoon and Qasem.

Iraq fans turn out in force

D

By David Hirst

The crowd looks almost entirely composed of Norwegian fans, probably not a surprise given where the Cup is being played. But I do hope there are some fans out there giving the Iraqi team a cheer, too!

Hi Lulu!

There certainly are a lot of red shirts in the crowd, but don't worry, Iraq have plenty of supporters cheering them on.

This is some of them celebrating their goal.

Iran coach says team ordered to leave US

D

By David Hirst

AP

The US is pushing back on complaints from Iran's national team that it was forced to leave the country immediately after its first World Cup match instead of having a day to recover in a hotel, saying that was the plan for the team all along.

"We were clear this was the process," Andrew Giuliani, the executive director of the White House FIFA Task Force, told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei said after Monday night's 2-2 draw with New Zealand that the team had been ordered to leave the US and return to its training base in Mexico only a few hours later.

Ghalenoei said the team had expected to spend the night in California to maximise the normal recovery process after its opening game.

42' Disaster for Iraq! Haaland scores again

What a nightmare.

The Iraqi defender's back pass is way too short.

Erling Haaland rushes at the keeper, and the keeper smashes a clearance off the onrushing Haaland and into the goal.

What a gift for the Norway striker.

We're back after another drinks break.

Pretty average game at the moment.

US star's ominous warning for Socceroos

D

By David Hirst

The US team says it's prepared for the physical and mental challenges of the weeks ahead — including what's likely to be a physical meeting with Australia on Saturday at 5am (AEST).

Midfielder Sebastian Berhalter credits this tenacity to coach Mauricio Pochettino, who has taken over a team that repeatedly flopped on the international stage and infused it with a stronger mentality grounded in a few core beliefs.

"I think one is that we're American. We don't take s***," Berhalter said.
