アイオンはNTTが2019年に構想を発表した。発信から受信まで、すべての通信を光信号でやりとりする。従来の通信で必要とされる電気信号への変換が不要になるため、少ない消費電力で低遅延の通信が可能になるメリットがある。
NTTの島田明社長は「社会実装に向け、いろいろなパートナーと周辺のハードウェアやソフトウェアを拡張させていくことが重要だ」と話した。
