Prince William and Kate Middleton Attend Commonwealth Games with Children

Prince William and Kate Middleton briefly paused their summer break to attend the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, on Saturday, August 1, making it a rare family outing with their three children - Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. The Prince and Princess of Wales, both 44, were joined by Prince George, 13, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8, for the sporting event. According to reports by The Telegraph and GB News, the appearance marked the siblings' first official public engagement in Scotland. Known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay while in Scotland, William and Kate spent time meeting Team Wales athletes and their families during the Games. The royal couple also visited SportsAid, the youth sports charity of which Kate has served as patron since 2013, highlighting its work in supporting promising young athletes.

Rare royal family outing during summer break

The Wales family typically keeps a low profile during the summer holidays, using the school break to spend private time together. They are also expected to spend part of the season at Balmoral Castle, where the British royal family traditionally gathers in late summer. Although Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are largely kept out of the public eye, they occasionally accompany their parents to major public events. Earlier this summer, George and Charlotte joined William and Kate at the Wimbledon men's singles final, where they watched Italy's Jannik Sinner successfully defend his title against Germany's Alexander Zverev. Princess Kate later presented the trophies in her role as patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Prince Louis did not attend the Wimbledon outing.

Charlotte's Commonwealth Games connection

This was not Princess Charlotte's first Commonwealth Games appearance. At the 2022 Games in Birmingham, England, she attended alongside her parents for her first solo royal sporting engagement. Then seven years old, Charlotte watched field hockey, swimming and gymnastics competitions and revealed that gymnastics was her favourite sport.

Other royals also attended Glasgow Games

The Prince and Princess of Wales were among several senior members of the royal family to attend this year's Commonwealth Games. On July 30, Princess Anne and Prince Edward made a rare joint appearance with their respective spouses, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, as they attended multiple sporting events. The 2026 Commonwealth Games were held in Glasgow after the event was moved from Victoria, Australia. The revised edition featured athletes from all 74 Commonwealth nations competing across 10 sports, including athletics, swimming, gymnastics, boxing, netball, judo and weightlifting, with several disciplines also featuring adaptive sports competitions. King Charles III and Queen Camilla officially opened the Games on July 23 with a memorable entrance from the iconic Doctor Who TARDIS prop at Glasgow's Hydro Stadium. During his opening speech, the King praised the Commonwealth's unity and commended athletes, organisers and volunteers for bringing the event together.
