Flaviu Radulescu, co-founder and CEO of Runware, stated that distributed compute, positioned closer to end users for faster inference, is the long-term winning strategy. He highlighted the Runware system's ability to scale and add capacity quickly, deploy anywhere with power access, and adapt to new hardware. Unlike traditional data centers that can take months or years to build, Runware's pods use a closed-loop cooling system and do not require water, with a build time of mere days.

"Demand for inference is growing faster than facilities can be built," Radulescu said. "What we want is to power the world’s intelligence, to be the backbone every AI model runs on with capacity that keeps up with demand instead of throttling it."

Runware currently has 10 pods deployed across the U.S., Europe, and Asia-Pacific. The company already provides inference services to clients such as Higgsfield AI and Wix, and has 160 sites available for pod deployment. In December, Runware secured $50 million in Series A funding to support the infrastructure needed for companies generating images. The expansion into pods is viewed as integral to the company's core mission of providing inference services, rather than being a standalone product.

While major AI labs like OpenAI and SpaceX are reportedly investing heavily in building their own data centers, with OpenAI nearing a substantial deal for a facility in Ohio, Radulescu sees these efforts not as competition but as validation of the market's need. He emphasized the flexibility of the Sonic Inference Pods as a key differentiator.

"Every pod runs as part of a single network, so requests go wherever there’s capacity, closer to the users, and if one pod goes offline, traffic moves to another," he explained. This distributed approach means a system failure affects only one pod, not an entire fixed facility. Customers requiring dedicated hardware can be allocated entire pods.

Radulescu also expressed confidence that other companies are unlikely to replicate this capability easily, citing the slow pace of hardware development and the scarcity of specialized talent required for design, fabrication, and testing.

Building AI data centers is a subject of controversy due to their significant resource consumption, with some communities already reporting increased utility costs. Runware envisions a future where its infrastructure runs on renewable power and does not strain community resources, acknowledging that this ideal is not yet fully realized.

Radulescu asserted that AI power consumption will increase regardless, driven by inference demand, irrespective of the supplier. Runware's focus remains on how this demand is met efficiently. "No transmission losses, no water in cooling, and we’re using power that already exists instead of asking for new grid capacity to be built. More inference built this way means less new grid, less water, for the same amount of compute."
