Sarah Taylor to Make History as England's First Female Fielding Coach in Men's Cricket

Sarah Taylor, a former wicketkeeper, has been appointed as England's fielding coach for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand, marking a historic first for a woman in a major men's sport in England. Taylor, 36, who played 226 matches for England, has previously coached with Sussex, Manchester Originals, and England Lions. Her appointment comes as England seeks to address criticisms of their fielding after a disappointing Ashes series. England's managing director of men's cricket, Rob Key, praised Taylor, saying she is "one of the best in the business" and has been "outstanding" in her previous coaching roles. Taylor's chance arises with Carl Hopkinson currently engaged in the Indian Premier League with Mumbai Indians. Key indicated both coaches will continue to work with the team in the future.

Taylor expressed her desire to work behind the scenes, preferring to focus on her coaching rather than seeking limelight. She aims to make a difference by working with top players.

Other notable female appointments in men's sports include Marie-Louise Eta at Union Berlin and Hannah Dingley's brief stint at Forest Green. Andy Murray's hiring of Amelie Mauresmo from 2014 to 2016 also drew parallels.

England's first Test against New Zealand begins on June 4 at Lord's, their first since the Ashes defeat. The team will gather for a three-day training camp in Loughborough from May 25, including bowler Ollie Robinson and uncapped players James Rew, Emilio Gay, and Sonny Baker. Former New Zealand bowler Tim Southee will join as bowling coach for the series. Coach Brendon McCullum, who has been on leave since the T20 World Cup, will be present at the camp. A curfew introduced during the Sri Lanka tour will remain in place. Key emphasized the need for players to perform at their best without overcomplicating the approach, encouraging them to refine their game based on conditions.
