Three bodies found in Connecticut home purchased at foreclosure auction

Three bodies were found in a Connecticut home that was purchased “as is” during a foreclosure auction, authorities said.

The new homeowner discovered skeletal remains of three people inside the Burlington property, located about 20 miles west of Hartford, and contacted authorities just before 5 p.m. Sunday, Connecticut state police said.

The home, which is located on a private road and looks abandoned, had been purchased “as is” at a foreclosure auction earlier this month, and it was unclear how long the bodies had been inside it.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has not yet determined a cause of death, but authorities said there is no indication of anything suspicious and no indication of any criminal aspect.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the identities of the three individuals.

“This appears to be an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public at this time,” police said.

Neighbors said that they hadn’t seen the residents of the home “in years,” Connecticut Marshal Grant Carragher told CTInsider.

However, another neighbor told WSFA 12 they saw an older man emptying the trash several months ago.

Town records viewed by the outlet showed that the home had been purchased by Paul and Sally Anne Cash in 2019. The foreclosure process on the home had started last summer.

Chris Thogmartin, the third-party attorney appointed by the court to handle the home’s sale, told NBC Connecticut why bidders might not see the inside of a home during an auction.

“I always send out a letter, like the week before the auction saying, listen, you know, there’s a foreclosure auction scheduled. It would be helpful for the bidders to have interior access. You’re not required to provide this, but I think it might be in your best interest,” Thogmartin said. “We never got a response to that, which is not unusual.”

Thormartin noted there was a “keep out” sign on the property during the foreclosure process, even though the house appeared to be long abandoned.

“I don’t think anyone had been inside, but who knows? I mean, it puzzles me as to who would put that sign up. I suppose it could have been the owner,” he said.

According to court documents, the owners did not show up for any of the hearings before the home was foreclosed.

Detectives from the Connecticut State Police Western District Major Crime unit are investigating.

Police said they will provide updates once a manner of death is determined and once the three individuals have been identified.
