Tuchel reportedly omits Cole Palmer from England World Cup squad over personality concerns

Thomas Tuchel has reportedly left Cole Palmer out of England’s World Cup squad after concerns over the forward’s personality and suitability for tournament football. The Chelsea star was one of the biggest names missing from Tuchel’s latest squad announcement despite scoring ten goals during the season. The England manager is believed to be focusing strongly on team chemistry and leadership while building his squad for the World Cup. Palmer’s omission comes after an inconsistent campaign with Chelsea. Injuries and changes in management affected his performances during the season. Although Palmer remained one of Chelsea’s important attacking players, Tuchel, as per reports by The Sun, preferred experienced personalities and strong dressing-room leaders for the tournament setup. Phil Foden was another major attacking player left out after struggling to make a strong impact for Manchester City.

Thomas Tuchel has instead selected senior players like Dan Burn and Jordan Henderson. Even though some supporters questioned those selections, the German coach reportedly believes experienced players play a key role in maintaining team spirit during major tournaments. Former England defender Conor Coady had a similar role under previous manager Gareth Southgate. Coady barely featured on the pitch during Euro 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but he remained an important figure inside the dressing room. Tuchel appears to be following a similar approach by selecting players who can influence the atmosphere around the squad. Palmer’s exclusion adds to a disappointing year for the young forward. The 24-year-old had earlier become a national hero after scoring England’s equaliser in the Euro 2024 final against Spain. However, he struggled to maintain consistency this season. The Chelsea attacker also dealt with fitness problems earlier in the campaign after missing two months with a groin injury. He returned to action in 2026 and featured in England’s recent friendly matches against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley. Palmer came off the bench against Uruguay but was substituted early during the defeat to Japan after failing to make a strong impression. Chelsea’s unstable season also affected several players. The club parted ways with former manager Enzo Maresca in January, while his replacement Liam Rosenior also left the role last month.
