UK Home Office Denies Visa to Palestinian Jerusalemite Mother, Approves Father's, Citing 'Insufficient UK Ties'

A Palestinian Jerusalemite living in London, Karim Abdallah, has had his family summer plans ruined after the UK Home Office denied his mother’s visa application, citing insufficient ties to the UK, while approving his father’s.

Therese Abdallah, 69, a retired English teacher, and her husband Ghassan, a psychologist, applied for visas to visit their son in London and attend a family wedding in Ireland. Despite previous successful visits, Therese’s application was rejected due to concerns she might not return, weighing her UK ties against those in her home country.

The decision was surprising given both parents used the same invitation and evidence, with Ghassan’s application being approved. Therese, born and raised in East Jerusalem, has strong ties there, including residency that would be jeopardized by prolonged absence.

Karim, who has legally resided in the UK since 2019, working and paying taxes, expressed devastation, stating the Home Office has ruined their plans. A Home Office spokesperson emphasized individual merit-based assessments without commenting on the case.

This incident highlights the challenges Palestinian Jerusalemites face due to their unique status, holding Israeli and Jordanian travel documents, and the stringent UK visa process.
