Union Cabinet Approves Rs 25,000-Crore Sarthak Public Distribution System Scheme

The Union Cabinet approved the Rs 25,000-crore Sarthak Public Distribution System scheme to modernize India’s food security network, supporting nearly 80 crore beneficiaries. The scheme, described as a structural reform by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, aims to enhance efficiency, transparency, and citizen engagement. Key components include 'Nirmal', an AI-driven beneficiary registry for real-time integration and reduced duplication; 'ASHA', a multilingual AI-powered grievance redressal platform integrated with WhatsApp and chatbots, capable of handling up to three lakh interactions daily; and 'Saksham', an AI-enabled supply chain management system with vehicle tracking, QR-code traceability, and demand forecasting. The programme is expected to reduce food grain transportation distances by 15-50%, improving operational efficiency and lowering logistics costs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also discussed rapid climate change during the cabinet meeting, highlighting its importance through recent social media posts. The initiative is part of India’s broader push for technology-led governance and targeted welfare delivery.

The scheme is not intended to replace the existing PDS but to reform its transportation, logistics, and material handling. State governments will benefit from improved distribution arrangements and supply chain operations.
