Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance Announce Birth of Fourth Child

Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance announced the birth of their fourth child on Sunday.

Alec Neel Vance was born Sunday morning, the vice president said.

“Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother,” the Vances wrote in a statement on X.

“The incredible military doctors and staff members of Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit have been a blessing,” the statement added. “We are deeply thankful for all they have done for our family.”

The second lady announced she was pregnant in January.

The couple share three other children: Ewan, 9; Vivek, 6; and Mirabel, 4.

The vice president said on a podcast in June that he and the second lady had been having “an ongoing conversation for a couple of years” about having a fourth child, given the difficulty of being in the spotlight and the challenges on Usha Vance of having a baby at age 40.

“I remember when we decided to run for vice president, I said, ‘Honey, I really want to have a fourth kid.’ And she said, ‘Well, you can become vice president or you can have a fourth baby,’” Vance said at a White House event in March. “But, ladies and gentlemen, I am persuasive, because I got both.”

The vice president has echoed voices in the MAGA movement fretting about declining birth rates. In 2025, Vance told the anti-abortion March for Life rally in Washington, “I want more babies in the United States.”

The last time a sitting vice president became a new father was in 1870, the White House Historical Association told the Associated Press.

Vance has said he is unlikely to take formal paternity leave but plans to spend more time at home with his new child.

The Vances, when they are in Washington, D.C., live at the United States Naval Observatory.

They are reportedly seeking to purchase a new home in Middleburg, Virginia, a wealthy enclave outside the nation’s capital.
