Astronomers using 18 years of radio-telescope data from Oxford University have measured the power of jets from Cygnus X-1, the first confirmed black hole. The jets produce energy equivalent to 10,000 Suns and travel at half the speed of light, with their shape distorted by winds from the companion star. The research published in Nature Astronomy confirms theoretical models about how black holes channel energy to influence galaxy formation throughout the universe.
Scientists have measured for the first time the instantaneous power of jets from black hole Cygnus X-1, located 7,200 light-years away. The jet power is equivalent to 10,000 suns, traveling at half the speed of light. The research, based on 18 years of radio imaging and published in Nature Astronomy, found that 10% of all energy released as matter falls toward the black hole is carried away by the jets.
