Fabio Wardley v Daniel Dubois: boxing heavyweight title – live

Main-event ring-walks scheduled for 11pm BST Wardley v Dubois is bout of uncertainty | Mail AlexThe Co-op Live arena is right next door to the Etihad Stadium. I walked past Manchester City’s home ground, with the crowd roaring in the final few minutes of their game against Brentford, and it felt a relief that the boxing tonight is inside. It’s pretty cold in Manchester this evening but that didn’t stop a few of the City security guards jumping around in glee when a very late goal made it 3-0. But attention is now firmly back on the boxing and the Co-op already feels crammed with a sold-out crowd. It’s the least that Fabio Wardley and Daniel Dubois deserve for a fight that could be one of the most explosive and compelling heavyweight contests of the year. There is also a decent undercard and the celebs are drifting in slowly. Luke Littler has arrived but I was more interested to see Moses Itauma at ringside. I interviewed him a couple of months ago in Manchester. It was initially a bit of a challenge to get him to open up but, eventually, we got somewhere.Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley are very different characters but, in the ring, they share a knockout ratio of 95% in the combined 42 fights they have won. The unbeaten Wardley has knocked out 19 opponents in his 20 victories while Dubois has stopped 21 of 22 vanquished rivals. It’s an impressive statistic which belies the vulnerability at the heart of each man.Wardley, the WBO world heavyweight champion, comes from a white-collar boxing background with minimal experience as an amateur. The only blemish on his record is a draw in March 2024 with the Olympic medallist Frazer Clarke – whom he then knocked out with shocking brutality in the first round seven months later. John Stones to Leave Manchester City After Decade at Club

Manchester City confirmed John Stones will leave the club at the end of the season after a decade at the Etihad Stadium. The 31-year-old England defender, one of Pep Guardiola's first signings in 2016, has made nearly 300 appearances and won 19 major trophies including six Premier League titles and the 2023 Champions League. Injuries restricted him to only 16 appearances this season, making him the second long-serving player to announce his departure after Bernardo Silva.

Manchester City's Belgian winger Jérémy Doku aims to add goals to his sparkling skill set to become the world's best wide forward, comparing himself to Real Madrid's Vinícius Júnior. The 23-year-old has four goals in 40 appearances this season but wants to score more tap-ins, targeting five per season. He faces Southampton in Saturday's FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, hoping to help City reach their fourth consecutive final after defeats in the past two finals.

Guardiola defends City celebrations after Arsenal win as title race tightens

Pep Guardiola has defended Manchester City's emphatic celebrations after their crucial 2-1 win over Arsenal, calling criticism from pundits Wayne Rooney and Danny Murphy "stupid things". The victory moved City to within three points of the Premier League leaders with a game in hand. Guardiola emphasized the match was "a final" for City, who face Burnley on Wednesday knowing a win would level them with Arsenal on 70 points and +37 goal difference. Rodri is set to miss the trip to Burnley and possibly the FA Cup semi-final due to a groin injury.

Haaland keeps his cool and turns up heat on Arsenal as Gabriel loses his head

Erling Haaland scored a winner and refused to take a dive but could not resist a little dig at the fading GunnersMan of the weekend in the Premier League? It is not in doubt. Erling Haaland deserves the acclaim and not only because he scored the winner for Manchester City in the top-of-the-table showdown against Arsenal – his 23rd goal of the season in the competition and 34th for City overall. Another Golden Boot is within reach; Haaland’s only rival is Brentford’s Igor Thiago, who has 21. Another league title is also there for the taking.Yet Haaland trumped it all with something he did not do at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. It was an old-school battle between him and the Arsenal centre-half Gabriel Magalhães; a wrestling match at times, so much pushing and pulling, all about the upper body strength. There was always the potential for it to bubble over and that is what happened in the 84th minute. Continue reading...
