IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez has stated that collecting fees from vessels for traversing the Strait of Hormuz contradicts international law. Speaking in London, he emphasized that freedom of navigation is non-negotiable for the IMO and that no country has the right to obstruct traffic on straits for international navigation. This principle is enshrined in the SOLAS Convention and international customary law, he noted.
Maritime union official Dominguez reports that several vessels have been seized and detained in the Strait of Hormuz region in recent days, leaving thousands of seafarers trapped. Speaking on Friday, Dominguez called for the release of seafarers, emphasizing they are not at fault and that the situation is not improving, with no safe transit available anywhere in the Strait.
