12-year-old girl killed by falling tree branch at Banstead park, inquest hears
A 12-year-old girl Brooke Wiggins was killed by a falling branch while playing on a rope swing in Banstead, Surrey on 9 November 2024, just days before her 13th birthday. The tree she was swinging from, maintained by Surrey County Council, had not been inspected since May 2022 despite a re-inspection being due in May 2024. An inquest at South London Coroner's Court heard the swing should have been removed as per council policy had checks been carried out.
