Global Catastrophic Hunger Increases Ninefold Since 2016, Gaza and Sudan Hit Highest Crisis Level
The 2026 Global Report on Food Crises reveals catastrophic hunger has increased ninefold since 2016, with acute hunger cases doubling. For the first time in the report's history, Phase 5 catastrophic hunger was declared in Gaza Strip and parts of Sudan in 2025. Ten countries including Afghanistan, South Sudan, Sudan, and Yemen account for two-thirds of the 266 million people facing acute food insecurity, while 35.5 million children suffer acute malnutrition.
