Global brands Amazon, Ericsson, Sony linked to militia-controlled mines in DRC

An investigation by Global Witness alleges that major brands like Amazon, Ericsson, and Sony may have unknowingly sourced coltan linked to the M23 militia, which controls mines in the DRC and is accused of widespread human rights abuses. The minerals are smuggled to Rwanda and then exported, with traceability systems reportedly failing to detect the conflict sourcing.

Iran Executes Two More on Spy Charges as Judiciary Chief Vows No Leniency

Iran has executed two individuals, Yaqoub Karimpour and Nasser Bakarzadeh, on charges of spying for Israel. Karimpour, 41, a follower of the Yarsan religious minority, was arrested in June 2025 and denied access to a lawyer. Bakarzadeh was a Kurdish political prisoner arrested in December 2023. Iran's judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei dismissed international pressure, vowing no leniency in carrying out death sentences. At least 26 prisoners were executed in Iranian prisons in April 2026, including 14 political prisoners and one woman.

A courtyard house in Fuzhou, Fujian, where Communist spy Wu Shi once lived before being executed in Taipei in 1950, has become a national pilgrimage site following a hit drama 'Silent Honour'. The property was renovated in three months and opened in February, attracting up to 20,000 visitors daily over Chinese New Year. Since April, it has been designated one of China's 25 'National Security Education Bases', part of Beijing's messaging toward Taiwan framing spy executions within a reunification narrative.

Iran Executes 21-Year-Old Karate Champion Amid Surge in Protest-Related Executions

Iran's judiciary has confirmed the execution of Sassan Azadvar Joonqani, a 21-year-old karate athlete from Isfahan, at Dastgerd Prison. He was convicted of moharebeh (enmity against God) for allegedly attacking security forces with stones during January protests. The UN reports at least 21 executions and 4,000 arrests since late February, with human rights groups alleging torture to extract confessions and serious legal ambiguities in the case.
