‘Degree of complacency’: are supply chains prepared for impact of ongoing Iran war?

The economic warnings are bleak, but full extent of shortages are still not felt for many European countriesThe biggest energy shock in modern history, jet fuel shortages “within weeks”, a global recession – since Iran throttled shipping flows through the strait of Hormuz at the end of February the economic warnings have become increasingly dire.Yet 10 weeks on from the first US-Israeli attacks, share indices, companies and governments have been surprisingly sanguine. Every day the divergence grows between the eerie quiet on markets and alarming warnings of an imminent supply chain crunch. Continue reading...

Jet Fuel Shortages Threaten Summer Holidays as Prices Surge 120%

Jet fuel prices have surged over 120% since the start of the Middle East conflict, rising from $831 per tonne in late February to $1,838 in early April. With the Strait of Hormuz blocked for eight weeks, Europe faces potential physical shortages by June as reserves drop to critical levels. The UK, Europe's biggest jet fuel consumer, is particularly vulnerable with 65% of supplies imported and only four refineries remaining. Airlines including Lufthansa have already cut 20,000 flights, while fares on long-haul routes have jumped significantly - London to Melbourne is now 76% more expensive than last year.

UK Airlines to Cancel, Consolidate Summer Flights Amid Jet Fuel Shortage

UK airlines will be permitted to cancel or consolidate flights this summer under new government plans to conserve jet fuel amid ongoing Middle East disruptions. The legislation, announced Sunday, allows airlines to return allocated airport slots without losing them for the following season, enabling advance cancellations of underperforming routes. Flights must be cancelled at least two weeks in advance. The UK imports about 65% of its jet fuel, much from the Middle East, with the Strait of Hormuz closed since early March and some calculations showing just weeks of European supplies remaining.

European smaller airports face 'existential threat' from jet fuel price surge

Europe's smaller airports face an existential threat if jet fuel shortages triggered by the Middle East crisis lead to widespread route cancellations, the Airports Council of Europe has warned. The US-Israel war on Iran and closure of the Strait of Hormuz have doubled jet fuel prices, prompting some carriers to cancel flights. Regional airports, still 30% below 2019 traffic levels since Covid, are most exposed as demand on their routes is more price-sensitive. Lufthansa has already axed 20,000 summer flights via CityLine. Industry leaders warned airlines with weak liquidity positions will face pressure in September.

UK faces higher prices for eight months after war in Iran ends, says minister

Darren Jones suggests cost of energy, food and flights will remain high after de-escalation and Hormuz strait reopensThe UK faces higher prices for food and fuel for at least eight months after the war in Iran ends, a minister has said. The closure of the strait of Hormuz, a key shipping lane that carried a fifth of global oil and gas, has sent oil prices soaring since the US and Israeli attacks on Iran began in February. Darren Jones, the chief secretary to the prime minister, said the conflict would probably continue to raise prices for energy, food and flights in the coming months as potential issues around energy supplies affect production, rather than lead to shortages on supermarket shelves. The UK government has urged motorists to fill up their cars as usual amid higher prices at the pumps and for air travellers not to change their plans over potential jet fuel shortages. Jones told the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme: “You’re going to see prices go up a bit as a consequence of what Donald Trump has done in the Middle East. “That’s probably going to come online not just in the next few weeks, but the next few months. There’s going to be a long tail from this.” Asked how long higher prices might remain, Jones suggested it would be around eight months after the strait of Hormuz was unblocked and a de-escalation of the conflict had taken place. “I think our best guess is eight-plus months from the point of resolution that you’ll see economic impacts coming through the system,” he said. Donald Trump announced an indefinite extension of the US ceasefire with Iran last week that paused most of the fighting, but further efforts towards ending the conflict have been unsuccessful after the US president told his envoys not to travel to Pakistan for talks at the weekend. The UK government is stepping up planning for how to offset the impact, focusing on the live monitoring of stock levels and what plans are in place for addressing supply chain disruption. Jones said: “The government here in the UK, the work that I’m doing with the prime minister is looking at all of those things and saying, ‘What can we do within our power to help people to get through those difficult times?’” The government is also looking to secure stocks of carbon dioxide, which is used in the food industry and by breweries to make drinks fizzy, as well as for defence purposes and medical uses such as MRI scanning. Jones said he was seeking to ensure there was an adequate supply of beer for fans watching the men’s football World Cup which starts on 11 June. He said: “I raised this issue because if there is a problem with jet fuel on holidays and carbon dioxide on beer, the summer might be pretty depressing for people, but we’re doing everything we can to make sure that it’s not the case.” The Liberal Democrats have called for a bill to be included in the next king’s speech in May to put food security at the top of the government’s agenda. UK eases airline slot penalties amid fuel shortage concerns as government reassures travelers

The UK government has eased penalties for airlines canceling flights due to jet fuel shortages, exempting carriers from losing valuable takeoff and landing slots. Airport Coordination Limited can now grant exemptions from the use-it-or-lose-it rule during shortages. The government says airlines are not currently seeing fuel shortages and passengers should not change travel plans, though they should check with airlines before traveling.

European Airlines Cut Thousands of Flights as Jet Fuel Prices Double

European airlines are cutting thousands of flights this summer as jet fuel prices have roughly doubled since the U.S. and Israeli-led war began, with Europe importing about a third of its jet fuel from the Middle East. Lufthansa announced 20,000 flight cuts through the fall, while KLM and Scandinavian Airlines also announced schedule reductions. The International Energy Agency warns Europe faces its biggest energy security threat with jet fuel imports from the Middle East now nearly zero.

Iran Crisis to Dominate Global Politics for Months, Possibly Years - Politico

The Iran crisis will dominate global politics for months or years, with governments across Europe, Asia, and Africa preparing for a sustained energy shock including jet fuel shortages, food scarcity and inflation. US Republicans face political pressure ahead of November midterm elections if gasoline prices don't drop from current $4.042/gallon average. The US and Israel launched operations against Iran on February 28, with a two-week ceasefire announced April 7 and unsuccessful talks held in Islamabad on April 11.

Germany to Convene Security Council Over Jet Fuel Shortage Risks Amid Iran War

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will convene the National Security Council to address potential jet fuel shortages as European prices have more than doubled since the U.S.-Israel war against Iran began Feb. 28. Tehran blocked most shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for a fifth of global oil flows. While the situation is tense, Merz said Germany currently has sufficient fuel access but is prepared to act if conditions worsen.

IEA Warns Europe Faces Jet Fuel Shortages, Flight Cancellations Within Weeks

The head of the International Energy Agency has warned that Europe faces jet fuel shortages and potential flight cancellations within weeks if oil supplies remain blocked through the Strait of Hormuz due to the Iran war. Executive Director Fatih Birol said the continent has "maybe six weeks or so of jet fuel left" and called it "the largest energy crisis we have ever faced." Europe could see flight cancellations starting in May, with smaller inland airports most vulnerable. Developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America will suffer most, he said.
