Ben Stokes Tipped for Record-Breaking BBL Contract After International Retirement

Former England Test captain Ben Stokes could become the highest-paid player in Big Bash League (BBL) history after retiring from international cricket. According to reports from Code Sports, the all-rounder is attracting significant interest from multiple BBL franchises, with the Sydney Sixers leading the race for his signature ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket in June 2026, concluding a distinguished England career. However, the 35-year-old has expressed his desire to continue playing domestic and franchise cricket globally.

Unlike several former international captains who transitioned into coaching or broadcasting, Stokes intends to remain an active cricketer. He has recently returned to action for Durham and is expected to play a more significant role in the County Championship, aiming to help his home county achieve sustained success.

Reports from Code Sports indicate that Ben Stokes has shown interest in the BBL, and a bidding war has reportedly commenced among franchises. The Sydney Sixers have emerged as the frontrunners, partly due to the appointment of former England white-ball coach Matthew Mott, who has a successful history with Stokes. The pair collaborated in guiding England to the 2022 T20 World Cup title in Australia, with Stokes delivering a match-winning unbeaten 52 in the final against Pakistan.

Stokes has prior BBL experience, having played for the Melbourne Renegades in the 2014/15 season. Several other franchises are closely monitoring the situation, including the Hobart Hurricanes, with Cricket Tasmania having previously expressed its interest in securing the England star.

Cricket Australia is reportedly optimistic about securing Stokes for at least a portion of the upcoming BBL season. The proposed marquee deal is believed to be worth approximately AUD 600,000, which could establish him as the most expensive overseas signing in BBL history.

One primary challenge is scheduling. Stokes may prefer to spend Christmas with his family in England before potentially joining another franchise competition. The SA20 tournament, held in South Africa, begins in January, creating a potential scheduling conflict for the all-rounder.

An immediate return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) appears unlikely. Current BCCI regulations prevent Stokes from entering the IPL auction until 2028, as he opted out of the 2025 mega auction. Players who skip the mega auction are ineligible for subsequent mini auctions. He is also unavailable for the current edition of The Hundred, having not registered for the player draft.
