Bengal, Delhi Capitals Wicketkeeper Abishek Porel Arrested in Rape Case

Abishek Porel, wicketkeeper-batter for Bengal and Delhi Capitals, was arrested by Bengal Police on Tuesday in connection with a rape case. A 23-year-old medical student alleged Porel established a physical relationship under the promise of marriage, also accusing him of criminal intimidation and recording intimate moments without consent.

Porel was taken into custody in Hooghly, questioned, and after a medical examination, produced before the Chinsurah Court. The case originated from a complaint at Mogra Police Station.

The arrest follows a Calcutta High Court order on July 14 directing police to apprehend Porel. The court also ordered the seizure of electronic devices to prevent the dissemination of alleged private material. Police had previously seized a pen drive for forensic examination.

The complainant alleged police inaction and that Porel threatened to make private photographs public. She met Porel in 2023, with discussions about marriage involving their families. She alleged assault and confinement in Delhi on April 2, 2026, requiring medical attention afterward.

Porel has denied the allegations, indicating he would respond after the police inquiry. His cricket career, marked by a first-class debut in 2021-22 and India A call-ups, is now overshadowed by the legal case.

The investigation and court proceedings will determine the next steps. Porel remains an accused, with guilt to be determined judicially.
