Eastern Nagaland Peoples' Organisation Accuses Nagaland Government of Altering FNTA Agreement

The Eastern Nagaland Peoples' Organisation (ENPO) has accused the Nagaland government of attempting to dilute the core provisions of the memorandum of agreement (MoA) on Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority (FNTA), alleging a 'U-turn' on commitments. The MoA, signed on February 5, 2026, provides for a self-governing authority with legislative, executive, and financial autonomy. ENPO expressed concern over alterations to these key provisions, warning that modifications would dismantle the agreement's essence. The organisation urged the state government to pass the FNTA Bill without dilution, citing the need to address longstanding developmental and governance concerns in eastern Nagaland. ENPO alleged the state government had agreed in principle to the autonomy in its 2023 comments on the Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) submitted by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The ENPO will hold a central executive council meeting on June 3 in Tuensang to discuss the matter, following a consultative meeting with political leaders on June 2. Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak and Eastern Nagaland Legislators' Union (ENLU) members have been invited. The Nagaland government has not issued a clarification.

The ENPO has requested all political parties to depute three-member delegations and tribal councils to send their president, vice-president, and general secretary. Former parliamentarians from eastern Nagaland are also invited as special guests.
