Former Townsville Property Manager Found Guilty of Rape, Sexual Assault, and Burglary

A north Queensland jury has found the former caretaker of a Townsville apartment complex guilty of rape, sexual assault and burglary.

Alexander James Macdonald Terry, 69, pleaded not guilty to a total of 17 charges at a trial in the District Court in Townsville.

Jurors heard seven days of evidence including the accounts of four women who had accused Terry of rape and sexual assault between 2017 and 2023.

Prosecutors said Terry sexually assaulted the women at his home, his rental property and at units within the apartment complex he managed.

The court heard that Terry used his master key to gain entry to units.

The jury of six men and six women delivered verdicts on 12 of the charges on Wednesday morning after almost 23 hours of deliberations.

Terry was found guilty of one count of rape, nine counts of sexual assault, one count of sexual assault with a circumstance of aggravation and one count of burglary by breaking.

The jury was undecided on the remaining five charges: one count of rape, one count of burglary, two counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual assault with a circumstance of aggravation.

They returned to the jury room for further deliberations on Wednesday morning.

An additional nine charges were dropped during the trial due to a lack of evidence.
