GSTR-3B is a simplified summary return that taxpayers must file to declare their GST liabilities for a particular tax period and discharge these liabilities. Normal taxpayers are required to file these returns for every tax period.
The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has apologised for technical difficulties experienced in GSTR-3B return filing for the March 2026 tax period. Many chartered accountants and advocates yesterday voiced their concerns about being unable to file GSTR-3B monthly return for March 2026 tax period.
GSTN said on the GST portal: "Based on feedback from GSTN, Govt is considering extension of filing date of monthly GSTR 3B (20th April) by one day (21st April)."
For those who don't know, Form GSTR-3B is a simplified summary return and the purpose of the return is for taxpayers to declare their summary GST liabilities for a particular tax period and discharge these liabilities. A normal taxpayer is required to file Form GSTR-3B returns for every tax period.
Gujarat based Chartered Accountant Deep Koradia said to ET Wealth Online that for April 2026 month GSTR-3B filing, many tax payers and tax professionals were experiencing slow response from the GST portal since couple of days. According to Koradia, it is pertinent to note that even if payment is made from bank, it's not reflecting or reflecting very late on GST portal.
If a tax payer couldn't file GSTR-3B on 20th, he can be charged late fees and interest (as the GST portal is not working, one can't even make the payment smoothly). Koradia also says that if GST return due date is missed, some of the state government suspends the number and sends cancellation notice within couple of days from the due date (say Gujarat SGST), so it's very harsh consequences.
Chartered Accountant Abhas Halakhandi said in an earlier story that the GST Portal has not been working properly for the last several days. From the due date of quarterly GSTR-1 till April 20th due date of March GSTR-3B, taxpayers have been facing one technical issue after another, including template loading failures, repeated login problems, OTP issues, and several other glitches.
Chartered Accountant Chirag Chauhan said on X: "My staff worked tirelessly until midnight to upload the GST returns, facing immense challenges as the portal kept crashing! It took 10 times more effort than usual."
