Hong Kong Lawmaker William Wong Apologises After Drink-Driving Arrest

Hong Kong lawmaker William Wong Kam-fai has apologised for “causing inconvenience” to the public following his arrest for suspected drink-driving, careless driving and failing to stop and report an accident, after a crash involving his car and two parked vehicles.

“I sincerely apologise for the traffic incident involving me on the campus of the Chinese University of Hong Kong [CUHK] a few days ago, which has sparked public discussion and caused inconvenience to the Legislative Council, the university and various sectors,” Wong wrote on his social media on Wednesday.

“The incident has now been handed over to police and relevant government departments for follow-up and handling according to normal procedures, and I will fully cooperate with the investigation.”

A source said on Wednesday that the 66-year-old, an associate dean at CUHK’s engineering faculty, lost control of his vehicle at about 10.46pm on Monday at a staff residence on the campus, crashing into a parked car, which then hit a second vehicle.

Wong then allegedly drove away from the scene and parked his car outside another staff residence. A security guard reported the incident about 30 minutes later.

He later returned but failed a breathalyser test. No one was injured, but all three vehicles sustained damage.

Wong was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, careless driving and failing to stop and report an accident. He has been granted bail and is due to report back to police in late July.
