A rescue team on Saturday released from a barge in the North Sea a humpback whale that had been stranded in shallow waters near Germany since March.

Dubbed 'Timmy' by the German media, the whale was first spotted stuck on a sandbank on March 23 near the city of Luebeck before freeing itself and then becoming stuck again several times.

The mammal’s health deteriorated as it became repeatedly stranded in shallow waters near the coastal city of Wismar, and unsuccessful efforts to coax it toward deeper seas were livestreamed across the globe.

Before the release, a GPS transmitter was reportedly attached to track the whale’s future location, according to dpa.

Europe Records Hottest Year Ever in 2025 as Scientists Warn of Coming 'Super' El Niño

Europe experienced its hottest year on record in 2025, with up to 99% of the continent seeing above-average annual temperatures for the first time, according to WMO and EU scientists. The report confirmed Europe's worst wildfire season ever, fourth consecutive year of record sea temperatures, and significant glacier loss. Scientists warn a potentially "super" El Niño developing later in 2026 could drive global temperatures even higher through 2027.

Heavy Snowfall Strikes Moscow Causing Tree Falls and Travel Disruptions

Heavy snowfall hit Moscow overnight on Monday, causing over 200 trees to fall and damaging cars and power lines. Several trains and over 50 flights were delayed as a new record snow depth of 12 centimeters was set on April 27. The severe weather, caused by a deep Baltic cyclone north of European Russia, is expected to continue until Tuesday evening, bringing a full month's worth of precipitation within three days.
