By Kim Eun-jung SEOUL, May 15 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Group said Friday it has launched a pilot service on the southern resort island of Jeju that connects its electric vehicles (EVs) to the island's power grid. The company said it selected 40 customers using Hyundai Motor's Ioniq 9 and Kia's EV9 models for the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) service, providing bidirectional charging systems free of charge. V2G technology allows EVs to both draw electricity from and supply electricity back to the grid, effectively enabling them to function as large mobile batteries. Hyundai Motor Group said the Jeju pilot program, where wind and solar power account for a high share of the energy mix, would allow EVs to store excess electricity generated during the daytime and feed it back into the grid at night. Jeju has one of the highest EV adoption rates in South Korea, making the island a key test bed for EV and renewable energy infrastructure.
