Pune: Electronics production in India has reached around Rs 13 lakh crore and there should be an aim to make it the second largest export category from the country, Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Wednesday.

During the inaugural event of a new plant of electronics manufacturing service company Jabil, Vaishnaw announced that two more chip plants will start their commercial production in full swing this year.

"Today, we have an electronics manufacturing industry worth Rs 13 lakh crore in our country. A few years ago, someone had even thought of exporting electronics from India," the minister said.

As of March 2026, the electronics production was estimated to be around Rs 12 lakh crore and export in the segment was to the tune of Rs 3.3 lakh crore.

He said electronics exports were considered unthinkable.

"In the beginning, coming in the top 10 was a target. Last year, 2025, electronics as an export category became the third largest export category in the country. But now, we must take the target... We have to become the second largest exported category," Vaishnaw said.

The electronics exports were boosted in the country by smartphones with iPhone maker Apple accounting for the majority of shipments.

Vaishnaw said the government at the Centre and states; industry and young talent will have to work together to achieve the target.

The minister said there are two semiconductor plants in the country that have started full-fledged commercial operations and two more will commence commercial operations this year.

"Production of two plants has already started. They have started in good full swing. Third plant inauguration will be in July and by December, fourth plant of semiconductors will be fully functional commercial manufacturing in our country," Vaishnaw said.
