Iowa man faces over 100 charges for allegedly taking protected wildlife in Alabama

An arrest in northern Alabama has led to more than 100 charges against an Iowa man accused of taking protected wildlife, including a turtle found only within the state. The case centres on the flattened musk turtle, a species whose restricted range and declining numbers have placed it under strict protection. As reported by the radio station in Birmingham, Alabama, WBRC, the court records reveal that Aiden Throndson was arrested on August 8 near Highway 278 and County Road 73 in Winston County. The charges filed against him include allegations involving the capture of flattened musk turtles as well as the taking or sale of other protected species. Court records list 20 counts tied specifically to the protection of flattened musk turtles, alongside 104 counts alleging the taking or selling of protected species.

The flattened musk turtle, known scientifically as Sternotherus depressus, is native exclusively to Alabama. Its highly restricted distribution is one reason the species receives protection under both state and federal rules. For a species with such a limited range, the removal of individual animals can carry particular significance. The turtle is classified as critically endangered, and its numbers have declined as its available habitat has become increasingly limited. The allegations against Throndson include 20 separate counts relating to the capture or taking of flattened musk turtles. The turtle-related allegations form only a portion of the charges filed in Winston County. Court records show Throndson is also facing 104 counts concerning the taking or sale of protected species. Throndson was taken into custody on August 8, with the arrest recorded as taking place in the area of Highway 278 and County Road 73. The case is now moving through the court system, where the allegations will be dealt with individually.

The charges extend beyond turtles to other protected species

The flattened musk turtle is different from many species that occur across several states or regions. Its natural range is confined to Alabama, making it a state-specific species and leaving its population particularly tied to conditions within that area. The US Fish and Wildlife Service lists the turtle as critically endangered. Its limited habitat and dwindling population have prompted legal safeguards designed to prevent further losses. That status helps explain why the alleged capture of these turtles has become a significant part of the Winston County case. Wildlife laws can restrict the taking, possession and sale of protected species, with separate offences potentially arising from individual acts. Reportedly, following the arrest, a judge set Throndson’s bond at $100,000 in cash. Records also show an additional $5,200 good bond. The figures come as the Iowa man faces a total of 124 charges listed in connection with the case: 20 involving the alleged taking or capture of flattened musk turtles and 104 concerning protected species. The charges alone do not determine what happened. The evidence and the court proceedings will establish whether the allegations can be proved. As reported by WBRC, an attorney representing Throndson said there would be no comment at this stage, yet the case remains pending.
