The discovery of the bomb occurs almost three decades after the 1998 Good Friday peace accord largely ended sectarian violence in Northern Ireland, a region where sporadic attacks by militant groups continue.

Police in Ireland have found an "extremely significant" bomb inside a vehicle close to the border with Northern Ireland.

Police said detectives requested the assistance of the army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team after they stopped the vehicle on Wednesday.

On Friday, police said the EOD team had completed an examination of the vehicle but would not release the outcome "for operational reasons".

"What we found was an extremely significant seizure," Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly said.

"This was an explosive device."

The driver of the vehicle, a woman in her 20s, was arrested and continues to be detained on suspicion of offences against the state.

A man in his 40s has also been arrested in connection with the investigation.

The vehicle was stopped close to the County Monaghan town of Carrickmacross, which is about 10 kilometres from the open border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Sporadic attacks by militant groups, often attempted car bombings, continue in Northern Ireland almost three decades since a peace deal largely ended sectarian violence in the British-run region.

There have been two car bomb incidents this year in Northern Ireland that police have blamed on dissident republicans, including one that exploded outside a police station on the outskirts of Belfast in April.

The incidents reflect the decades of violence known as the Troubles which killed almost 3,600 people before the 1998 Good Friday peace accord.

"We certainly know that there are a small minority of dissident republicans who did not agree with the Good Friday Agreement, they did not put weapons and explosives (out of use)," Commissioner Kelly said.

"There's a small minority of these individuals, I would describe them as radicalised republicans, and this is a threat that we're going to continue to face for some time."
