Lebanese and Israeli delegations are discussing a US-drafted security memorandum of intent in Washington to address security concerns in southern Lebanon.
BEIRUT, June 26. /TASS/. Lebanese and Israeli delegations are discussing a memorandum of intent in the sphere of security, drafted by US experts, at talks in Washington, a US Department of State official told Al Hadath television.
"Despite differences, the two sides may sign this document following the fifth round of talks that should be over soon," the official said.
According to him, as a gesture of good will, Israel will withdraw its troops from an area in southern Lebanon that has been under occupation. "A pilot zone for Lebanese army units will be established there," he explained. "The sides have not yet specified the exact locations from which the Israeli troops will be withdrawn," he added.
During the experiment, the Lebanese military will have to demonstrate the ability to keep the situation under control and confront potential incursions by Hezbollah. Its fighters must fully withdraw from the area south of the Litani River.
