Emergency services were called to the Hill River boat ramp, 160 kilometres south of Cairns, just after 12pm, after receiving reports of a shark attack.
A 66-year-old man is understood to have been attacked while at Kennedy Shoal, before being retrieved from the water.
He later died from his injuries.
Queensland Police said a report will be prepared for the coroner.
